Perceptions of Discrimination at Work Amongst Workers in Quebec
Abstract
Against a backdrop of growing concerns regarding equity, diversity and inclusion within organisations in Quebec, this study aims to examine perceptions of discrimination in the workplace, their determinants and their consequences, whilst shedding light in particular on the forms of discrimination, at-risk groups and links with job satisfaction in the Quebec context. Four specific objectives are targeted: 1) to describe the forms of perceived discrimination; 2) to identify the demographic characteristics (visible minority status, immigration status, gender) associated with these perceptions; 3) to identify the occupational and geographical contexts (sector of activity, field of employment, region) associated with these perceptions; and 4) to examine the relationship between perceptions of discrimination in the workplace and job satisfaction. Frequency analyses and logistic regression analyses were carried out using data from the General Social Survey (2016) (Statistics Canada, 2017a) – Canadians at Work and at Home (n = 2,182 working people in Quebec aged between 18 and 65). The results indicate, firstly, that informal forms of discrimination are reported more frequently than formal forms. Furthermore, visible minority status is significantly associated with perceptions of discrimination at work. Finally, these perceptions are negatively associated with job satisfaction. The discussion proposes possible explanations for the results and practical implications for organisational practices.
