Cet article explore la progression de carrière des expatriés et des rapatriés sur l'échelle hiérarchique et les parcours en treillis à travers les prismes théoriques de la théorie de la construction de carrière, de la théorie du chaos des carrières et du modèle de l'échelle hiérarchique par opposition au modèle en treillis. La méthode de recherche est une étude exploratoire et qualitative, utilisant des techniques d'échantillonnage raisonné et d'échantillonnage en boule de neige. 78 entretiens ont été menés avec des expatriés et des rapatriés originaires de pays du monde entier. Les résultats révèlent que les personnes interrogées ont eu des carrières internationales multidirectionnelles, passant d'une évolution de carrière linéaire et hiérarchique à une évolution non linéaire et imprévisible, au cours de laquelle elles ont progressé dans leur carrière.
